解説 Definition
ある分野にきわめて深い知識や卓越した能力を持つ人を指す名詞。一般には博識な専門家という意味で使われるが、現代ではサヴァン症候群のように、特定の領域で非常に突出した才能を示す人を表すこともある。文脈により意味がやや異なる。
A savant is a person with very deep knowledge or great skill in a particular subject. It is often used for experts in academic, artistic, or technical fields. In some contexts, it can also refer to a person with exceptional mental abilities in a narrow area.

savant は「何でもできる人」より、「ある一点に入ると急に別格になる人」の像で覚えると残りやすい語。tech savant, math savant のように分野名と結びつきやすく、「その領域では専門家を超えて突出している」という響きがある。genius が天才一般にも広く使えるのに対し、savant は知識や技能が特定分野に深く集中した感じ。savant syndrome の表現とも結びつけると定着しやすい。似たつづりの servant と見間違えないこと。

savant の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 savant「知っている人」がそのまま英語に入り、もとは savoir「知る」、さらにラテン語 sapere「賢い・味わう」にさかのぼる。つまり savant は「知を身につけた人」で、sage や savvy も同じ流れの語。
Savant was borrowed directly from French, where it means "a learned person" or "one who knows." It comes from savoir "to know," which goes back to Latin sapere, a verb that originally meant "to be wise" and also "to taste." The idea moved from having judgment or wisdom to being a person of great knowledge. Related English words include sage and savvy.
