解説 Definition
ある分野にきわめて深い知識や卓越した能力を持つ人を指す名詞。一般には博識な専門家という意味で使われるが、現代ではサヴァン症候群のように、特定の領域で非常に突出した才能を示す人を表すこともある。文脈により意味がやや異なる。

savant の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 savant「知っている人」がそのまま英語に入り、もとは savoir「知る」、さらにラテン語 sapere「賢い・味わう」にさかのぼる。つまり savant は「知を身につけた人」で、sage や savvy も同じ流れの語。
Savant was borrowed directly from French, where it means "a learned person" or "one who knows." It comes from savoir "to know," which goes back to Latin sapere, a verb that originally meant "to be wise" and also "to taste." The idea moved from having judgment or wisdom to being a person of great knowledge. Related English words include sage and savvy.
