「disobedient」はラテン語 dis-「否定」+ obedient の形で、さらに oboedire は ob-「…に向かって」+ audire「聞く」にさかのぼる。obedience や audience と同根で、「言うことを聞かない」がそのまま「不従順な」という意味に見えてくる。
Disobedient combines dis- "not" with obedient. Obedient goes back to Latin oboedire, literally "to listen toward," from ob- "toward" and audire "to hear." The idea moved from listening to someone's words to following their command, so disobedient came to mean not willing to obey. Obedience and audience share the same ancient root.
