急な斜面や崖のこと。地質学では侵食や断層によって形成された急斜面を、軍事建築では防御構造の急斜面を指します。
A scarp is a steep slope or cliff, especially one formed naturally by erosion or movement in the earth. It is mainly used in geography and geology. This is a technical word and is not common in everyday conversation.

scarp はまず escarpment（断崖・急斜面）の短い形として覚えると定着しやすい。地理・地学で、地面が急に切り立っている場所を指す専門寄りの語で、日常語の cliff より「地形そのもの」を述べる感じが強い。sharp に近いつづりから「鋭く切られたような斜面」を連想すると覚えやすい。fault scarp などの形で出やすい。scarf と一字違いなので、つづりの見間違いにも注意。
