解説 Definition

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

secular「宗教に属さない、世俗の」+ -ize「〜化する」と分解する。modernize「近代化する」や nationalize「国有化する」と同じ語形成である。secularize education「教育を世俗化する」、secularize institutions「制度を宗教から切り離す」が典型表現。反対方向の語として religious「宗教的な」を対置すると整理しやすい。

Split secularize into secular, meaning nonreligious, and -ize, meaning to make or turn into. The ending works as it does in modernize and nationalize. Picture the phrase secularize education as moving education away from religious control.

例文

The government will secularize schools and end religious control.

政府は学校を世俗化し、宗教による支配を終わらせる。

secularize の語源・成り立ち Etymology

secular「世俗の」に、動詞を作る接尾辞 -ize「〜化する」を付けた語。secular はラテン語 saeculum「世代、時代、現世」に由来し、宗教的・永遠的なものに対する「この世に属するもの」という意味へ発展した。

This verb combines secular with the verb-forming suffix -ize. Secular comes from Latin saeculum, meaning a generation, age, or the present world, and developed the sense of belonging to this world rather than to religious or eternal matters.
