shafting は Old English の sceaft「棒・柄」に由来する shaft に、名詞化の -ing が付いた語です。もとは槍の柄のような細長い棒を指し、そこから機械の回転軸へ意味が伸びたので、「力を伝える棒」と考えると覚えやすいです。関連語は shaft、crankshaft。
