覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

ラテン語の「このように」と結び付け、「ここは原文のとおり」という合図として覚えましょう。引用を勝手に直さず、そのまま写す場面を思い浮かべます。

Connect sic with its Latin meaning, “thus” or “in this way.” Picture a writer copying an unusual expression exactly as it appears in the source.

sic の語源・成り立ち Etymology

sic はラテン語の副詞 sic「このように、そのまま」からの借用で、英語では引用に添えて「原文どおり」を示す。分解語ではないが、形を変えず保つという感覚が核にあり、関連表現に sic transit, sic semper がある。

Sic is borrowed directly from the Latin adverb sic, meaning “thus,” “so,” or “in this manner.” In English editorial practice, it came to be inserted into quoted material to indicate that a surprising form has been reproduced just as it stood in the source. It is not an abbreviation, so interpretations that treat its letters as initials are later inventions rather than its true origin.
