simplex はラテン語 simplex に由来し、sim-/sem-「一つ」+ -plex「折り重なった」が骨格で、直訳すると「一重の」です。入り組まず一層だけ、という像から「単純な」「単体の」が生まれ、simple や duplex にも同じ発想が見えます。
