Lawfulness is the quality of being allowed by law or being in agreement with legal rules. It is used in legal, official, or formal discussions when judging whether an action, decision, or system is legal. The word is close in meaning to "legality," but it often sounds more formal or abstract.

まず基礎の law「法律」と lawful「合法の」を押さえ、そこに -ness が付いて「その性質」になった形だと見ると覚えやすいです。つまり lawfulness は「lawfulであること」そのもの。単独で丸暗記するより、question the lawfulness of the action や the lawfulness of the decision の形で、「その行為・決定は法にかなっているか」を問う場面と結びつけると定着します。似た legality もありますが、lawfulness はより素直に「法律に従っている状態」と捉えると混同しにくいです。

lawfulness は law「法」+ -ful「…に満ちた」+ -ness「性質」でできた語です。law は古英語 lagu、さらに古ノルド語 lagu「置かれたもの・定め」にさかのぼります。つまり「定めに沿っている性質」がそのまま合法性で、関連語は lawful と outlaw です。
