A metacarpal is one of the bones in the middle part of the hand, between the wrist and the fingers. This word is mainly used in anatomy and medicine. There are five metacarpals in each hand.

まず core は carpal。carpal は hand/wrist 周辺の医学語で、carpal tunnel syndrome などでも見かけます。metacarpal はその carpal の“先にある、手のひら側の長い骨”と位置で覚えると定着しやすいです。指そのものの骨ではなく、手首と指の間を橋渡しする5本の骨、というイメージを持つのがコツ。さらに metatarsal が「足の甲の対応物」なので、手なら metacarpal、足なら metatarsal と対で整理すると混同しにくくなります。
