single が「一人の・独身の」と分かれば、-ness は happy→happiness と同じく「状態」を名詞化する定番語尾なので、singleness は「single である状態」とほぼそのまま取れます。single life, remain in singleness, the freedom of singleness のように、恋愛感情よりも生活上の立場や生き方を述べる場面で出やすい語です。loneliness が「寂しさ」という感情なのに対し、singleness はかなり中立的で、独立や自由の文脈にも乗ると押さえると混同しにくくなります。
