覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
言語名としては通常 Slovak と大文字で書き、speak Slovak、study Slovak のように冠詞なしで使います。Slovakia「スロバキア」と結び付け、近縁の Czech「チェコ語」と対で覚えましょう。Slovene はスロベニアの言語なので、国名 Slovakia/Slovenia の違いにも注意します。
Treat Slovak as the language connected with Slovakia: the shared Slovak- beginning makes that relationship easy to see. Language names are normally capitalized in English and used without an article in expressions such as speak Slovak or study Slovak. Pair it with Czech because the two are closely related West Slavic languages and their speakers can often understand much of each other’s speech. Do not confuse Slovak with Slovene: Slovak belongs to Slovakia, while Slovene belongs to Slovenia.

slovak の語源・成り立ち Etymology
Slovakはスラヴ語の「slovo(言葉)」に由来し、「言葉を話す人々」を意味する。同語源のSloveniaも同じ起源を持つ。スラヴ民族が自らを「言葉が通じる仲間」と呼んだことから生まれた名称。
The English name Slovak ultimately belongs to the Slavic group of ethnonyms associated with words such as Proto-Slavic slovo, meaning “word.” These names have traditionally been understood as identifying people who shared intelligible speech. Slovak is therefore related historically to Slav and to names such as Slovene, although Slovak and Slovene now identify distinct peoples and languages. English adopted Slovak as both an ethnic adjective and the name of the language.
