sphincter はラテン語を経て、ギリシャ語 sphinktēr「締めるもの」に由来し、語根は sphingein「きつく締める」です。つまり「しぼって閉じるもの」がそのまま括約筋になった語で、働きのイメージが語形に残っています。同根語に sphinx があります。
