語源ははっきりしませんが、たぶんスウェーデン方言 skvabb「だぶついた脂身・ぶよぶよしたもの」にさかのぼります。もとは「ずんぐりした塊」の感じで、そこからふっくらした若鳥、特に若鳩を指す語になったと考えると意味の移り方が見えます。関連形に squabby があります。
The origin of `squab` is uncertain, but it is probably related to a Swedish dialect word, `skvabb`, meaning soft fat or something flabby. The earliest sense seems to have been a short, thick, lump-like thing. From that idea, the word came to be used for a plump young bird, especially a young pigeon.
