解説 Definition
stereotyping は stereotype（固定観念で見る、型にはめる）の現在分詞・動名詞です。人の個性や事情を考慮せず、集団についての固定的で単純化された見方で判断する行為を表します。
Stereotyping is the act of judging or describing individuals according to fixed, oversimplified assumptions about a group, rather than considering their personal qualities and circumstances.

stereotyping は stereotype に -ing が付いた形。stereotype はフランス語 stéréotype を経て、ギリシャ語 stereos「固い」+ typos「型・刻印」に由来し、同じ型を何度も刷る印刷板から「人を決まった型にはめる」の意になった。関連語は stereo、type。
Stereotyping is formed from stereotype by dropping its final e and adding -ing. Stereotype entered English through French stéréotype and combines elements derived from Greek stereos, meaning solid, and typos, meaning impression or type. It originally named a solid printing plate used to reproduce the same page repeatedly. That idea of an unchanging mold later produced the figurative senses of a fixed belief and of treating people according to such beliefs.
