Stoichiometry is the part of chemistry that deals with the exact amounts of substances in chemical reactions. It is used when calculating how much of a material is needed or produced, so it is a technical scientific term.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず語尾の -metry を geometry, thermometer などと同じ「測る・計る系」と結びつける。stoichiometry は chemistry の中でも、反応の速さをみる kinetics ではなく、reactants と products の“量の比”を出す分野。balance an equation, mole ratio, limiting reagent と一緒に覚えると定着しやすい。単なる measurement ではなく、反応式の係数を手がかりに necessary amount を計算する学問だ、と使用場面ごと固定すると忘れにくい。

stoichiometry はギリシャ語 stoikheion「元素・基本単位」と -metry「測定」からできた語です。stoikheion は元々「列をなす一つ一つ」の意で、物質を要素ごとに数えて測る発想がそのまま化学量論になりました。だから「反応を量でぴたりと合わせる学問」と理解でき、関連語は stoichiometric、geometry です。
Stoichiometry comes from Greek stoikheion, meaning an element or basic component, and -metry, meaning measurement. Stoikheion originally meant something like one item in a row, then came to mean a basic unit or element. The word later developed in chemistry for measuring and calculating substances by their basic components and amounts.
