stoned の語源・成り立ち Etymology

stoned は、古英語 stān(石)に由来する stone を動詞として用い、-ed を付けた過去形・過去分詞です。文字どおりには「石を投げつけられた、石打ちにされた」を表します。「薬物などで酩酊した」という俗語義は20世紀に成立しましたが、石打ちの語義から直接生じたと断定できる根拠はありません。

Stoned is formed from the verb stone and the regular ending -ed. Stone descends from Old English stān, the ordinary noun for the hard mineral material. English later used the noun as a verb meaning to throw stones at someone or execute someone by that method. The drug-related slang sense of stoned developed much later in the twentieth century and is separate from the literal historical sense used in these examples.
