Strontium was named after Strontian, a village in Scotland where a mineral containing the previously unrecognized element was found in the late eighteenth century. The place name is of Scottish Gaelic origin and is traditionally interpreted in connection with a fairy point or promontory. The element name was created with -ium, an ending common in metallic element names. Its chemical symbol, Sr, reflects the beginning of strontium.
