stylistics の語源・成り立ち Etymology
stylistics は style「文体」+ -istic + -s から成り、「文体に関する学問」を表します。style はラテン語 stylus/stilus「尖った筆・鉄筆」に由来し、そこから「書き方」→「文体」へ意味が広がったので、stylist や stylus と並べると語の筋道が見えます。
Stylistics was formed from style with the scholarly ending -istics. Style goes back to Latin stylus or stilus, a pointed writing tool, and the sense later shifted from the tool itself to a way of writing. From there it came to mean the study of style; stylist and stylus are related words.
