unimpaired は否定の接頭辞 un- と impaired から成ります。impair は古フランス語 empeirer、さらに俗ラテン語で「より悪くする」を表す語にさかのぼり、pejorative と同系です。つまり「悪くされていない」から「損なわれていない・障害のない」です。
Unimpaired is made from un- "not" and impaired. Impair came into English through Old French from a Latin-based form meaning "to make worse," which is related to the same root seen in pejorative. So unimpaired originally meant "not made worse," and from there "not damaged" or "left whole."
