digester は digest「消化する・分解する」に -er「するもの」が付いた語で、digest はラテン語 digerere「分けて運ぶ・整える」由来です。di-「分けて」+ gerere「運ぶ」から、物を体内や槽の中で整理して分解する感じになり、digest や digestion も同じ語根です。
Digester is formed from digest plus the suffix -er, meaning "something that does" the action. Digest comes from Latin digerere, literally "to separate and carry" or "arrange," from di- and gerere, "to carry." The sense shifted from arranging things into order to breaking them down, as in digestion.
