obfuscated は、まず obvious「明白な」と対比で置くと記憶しやすい。obvious がひと目で意味が取れる状態なら、obfuscated は逆に、見てもすぐ分からないよう細工された状態。ITでは obfuscated code が定番で、変数名や構造をわざと崩して第三者に読ませにくくしたコードを指す。confusing が単に分かりにくいだけなのに対し、こちらは「意図的に不明瞭化した」含みが強い。encrypted は読めない、obfuscated は読めても理解しづらい、と分けると定着する。
Link it to `obfuscated code`, a very common IT phrase. `Ob-` can make a word feel blocked or covered, so think of code made harder to follow on purpose. It is different from `encrypted`: you can still see it, but understanding it is the hard part.

ラテン語 obfuscare（暗くする・見えにくくする）にさかのぼり、ob-「覆うように」＋ fuscus「暗い」から成ります。もともと視界を曇らせる感覚なので、obfuscated は「意味や構造をわざと見えにくくした」という意味になり、同根に obscure、fuscous があります。
