stanch は古フランス語 estancher「液体の流れを止める」から来て、さらにラテン語 stare「立つ」にさかのぼると考えられます。『しっかり立って流れをせき止める』感覚から『止血する』となり、同じ語根の stand・stable のように『揺るがない、確固たる』の意味も見えてきます。
Stanch comes through Old French estancher, meaning to stop the flow of liquid, and is usually traced back to Latin stare, "to stand." The idea was of making something stand firm enough to block movement. That sense later narrowed to stopping a flow such as blood, and it is related in root to English words like stand and stable.
