catechism を知っているなら、それを覚えさせて身につけさせる『教える営み・学ぶ過程』が catechesis と捉えると残りやすいです。語尾 -sis は analysis などと同じく『作用・プロセス』を表すことが多いので、教義そのものではなく、段階的な宗教教育だと整理するとよいです。church classes, adult catechesis のように、教会で信徒や子どもに教理を系統立てて教える場面で出ます。catechism（教理問答・教理書）や catechist（教える人）との区別もセットで覚えると混同しにくいです。

catechesis はギリシャ語 katēkhēsis「口頭での教え」に由来し、kata-「下へ・徹底して」+ ēkhein「響かせる」に分けられます。もとは『耳に響かせて教える』感覚なので教理の口授を指し、関連語は catechism, echo です。
