subclasses は subclass(下位区分、サブクラス)の複数形で、大きな分類の中のより細かな区分を指します。プログラミングでは、親クラスのデータや振る舞いを継承するクラスを表します。
Subclasses are smaller or more specific divisions within a broader class or category. In object-oriented programming, they are classes that inherit data or behavior from a parent class.
使い方 Usage

- subclasses inherit ... from a parent class は「サブクラスが親クラスから…を継承する」。継承するものを inherit の後に置きます。 Subclasses inherit ... from a parent class describes what they receive through inheritance. Place the inherited data or behavior after inherit.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
sub-「下に」+ class「分類・クラス」で、大きなクラスの下に置かれる区分を連想します。単数 subclass に -es を付け、複数語尾は /ɪz/ と発音します。
Think of sub- meaning “under” and class as a category: a subclass sits below a broader class. Add -es to subclass for the plural; the ending is pronounced /ɪz/.

subclasses の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 sub(下の)+ classis(階級・分類)の組み合わせ。classis は元々ローマ市民の等級区分を指した。classify(分類する)と同根。「ある分類の下位に属する区分」が原義。
Subclasses is the plural of subclass, formed from the prefix sub-, meaning “under” or “below,” and class. Class ultimately comes from Latin classis, a division or rank of Roman citizens. The modern compound therefore denotes divisions placed beneath a broader class. The plural ending is written -es after the final s sound of subclass.
