脳の大脳皮質の下に位置する、またはそこに関係することを表す形容詞です。皮質下核や白質など、皮質の下にある脳領域・構造について使われます。
Subcortical means located below the cortex, especially below the outer layer of the brain. It is commonly used in neuroscience and medicine to describe brain structures, processes, or disorders in deeper areas. This is a technical adjective mainly seen in scientific contexts.

sub- は submarine, subcutaneous などと同じく「下・内側」を示すので、cortical（皮質の）を知っていれば「皮質の下にある」と取りやすい語です。医学英語では cortical と subcortical を対比で覚えると定着しやすく、subcortical structures / subcortical regions の形でよく出ます。運動・感情・認知などに関わる領域も含みますが、覚える中心はまず位置としての「皮質下の」です。subconscious と混同しないことにも注意。

ラテン語 sub（下に）＋ cortex（樹皮・外皮）＋ 形容詞語尾 -al の構成。cortex は脳の「皮質」を指し、その下の領域という意味。同根語に cortex（大脳皮質）、corticosteroid（副腎皮質ステロイド）がある。皮質の下に位置する構造を示す解剖学用語。
*Subcortical* is made from Latin *sub* "under" and *cortex* "bark" or "outer layer," plus `-al`. In anatomy, *cortex* came to mean the outer layer of an organ, especially the brain. So *subcortical* developed to mean "under the cortex," referring to structures below that outer layer.
