A subculture is a smaller group within a larger society that has its own style, values, interests, or habits. The word is often used for groups connected to music, fashion, games, or youth culture.

sub- は「主役ではない側・下位の」という形でよく出る接頭辞で、subtitle（字幕）や subcategory を知っていると感覚がつかみやすいです。culture が「文化」なので、subculture は「社会全体の標準ではないが、ある集団の中で濃く共有される文化」と整理すると覚えやすい語です。アニメ、特定の音楽ジャンル、ファッションのように、好きな人たちの間では強い一体感がある場面を思い浮かべると定着します。mainstream culture と対比し、counterculture のような“反主流”とは限らない点も一緒に押さえると混同しません。
