Suit came through Old French from a word related to Latin sequi, “to follow,” and developed meanings involving a connected set, including a matching set of clothes. Case, in the sense of a container, is associated with Latin capsa, “box.” A suitcase was therefore originally understood as a case designed to hold a suit or other clothing, before becoming the general term for portable travel luggage.
