覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
tables は table の規則的な複数形で、-s を付け table → tables、発音は /ˈteɪbəlz/ と語末が /z/ になる。three tables や clean the tables なら家具、tables of data や the report includes tables なら行と列で整理した「表」。平らな板という共通像で二義を結ぶ。
Tables is the plural of table: simply add -s, pronounced /z/ after the final voiced sound. Keep two common pictures in mind. In a room or restaurant, tables are pieces of furniture, as in three tables or clean the tables. In a report, tables organize data into rows and columns, as in several tables of data. Both senses connect historically to a flat board or surface. The surrounding words make the intended meaning clear: room, lunch, and clean suggest furniture, while report, data, rows, and columns suggest organized information.

tables の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 tabula(板・平板)からフランス語を経て英語へ。元は「文字を書く板」の意味で、平らな板→食卓→表と意味が広がった。関連語: tablet(錠剤・石板)、tabulate(表にする)。「平らな板」が全ての意味の出発点。
Tables is formed from table plus the regular plural ending -s. Table came into English through Old French from Latin tabula, meaning a board, plank, writing tablet, or list. The idea of a flat board developed into the familiar piece of furniture with a level surface. Because information could be written and arranged on such a board, table also came to mean an orderly display of facts or figures in rows and columns.
