テールライト、尾灯。自動車の後部に装備されている赤い灯火。他の車両に車の存在と走行方向を示すために使用される。
A taillight is a red light on the back of a car, motorcycle, or other vehicle. It helps other drivers see the vehicle, especially at night or in bad weather. The word is mainly used in driving and vehicle safety contexts.

tail は「しっぽ」から転じて「後ろの端」、light はそのまま「灯り」。つまり taillight は「車のいちばん後ろ側のライト」と分けると覚えやすいです。headlight が前、taillight が後ろ、という対比で押さえると定着します。車の説明で rear lights と近い場面でも出ますが、taillight は特に後部灯を指す語。brake light は「ブレーキ時に強く光る灯り」なので、後ろのライト全体をゆるく言うなら taillight、と整理すると混同しにくいです。

taillightは古英語系tail「尾・後端」とlight「光」の複合語です。動物の尾のように“いちばん後ろの端”を示すtailが使われるので、車の後部灯をそのまま見える形で名づけた語だと分かります。taillessやtailpieceも同じtailを含みます。
