tarnation は、damnation の婉曲形 darnation がさらに崩れ、方言形 ’tarnal（eternal の訛り）にも引かれてできた語です。語尾 -ation はラテン語系名詞形で、damn・condemn と同根なので、「地獄だ」が弱まって「くそっ」という感嘆になる流れが見えます。
Tarnation grew out of softened forms of damnation, especially darnation, and was also influenced by dialect forms like 'tarnal from eternal. Its ending follows the pattern of Latin-based nouns in -ation. Over time, the strong religious force of damnation weakened, and the word became a milder exclamation.
