Taylor originated as an English occupational surname for a tailor. It came through Anglo-French and Old French forms related to tailleur, “one who cuts,” from a verb ultimately derived from Late Latin taliare, “to cut.” A craft worker who cut and made clothing could therefore be identified by the occupation, which later became an inherited surname. Taylor subsequently developed widespread use as a given name for both men and women.
