Telugu is a Dravidian language spoken chiefly in the southeastern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It has its own script and is also used adjectivally for literature, cinema, and other cultural products in the language.

Connect Telugu with the southeastern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where it is widely spoken. In English, capitalize the language name and use it without an article in phrases such as speak Telugu or study Telugu. It can also modify a noun, as in Telugu literature or a Telugu film. Group it mentally with other Dravidian languages such as Tamil and Kannada, but do not treat them as varieties of one language: Telugu has its own linguistic history, literature, and distinctive script.

Teluguはドラヴィダ語族に属し、語源は古代の「Trilinga（三つのリンガ＝シヴァ神の聖地）」に由来するとされる。南インドのテランガーナ地方の名とも関連し、その土地の言語という意味を持つ。
The origin of the name Telugu is not fully settled. A traditional explanation connects it with Trilinga, interpreted as “three lingas,” referring to three sacred sites of Shiva; the name has also been associated with regional names such as Telangana. Because scholars have proposed other historical developments, the Trilinga account is best treated as a traditional etymology rather than an established derivation. In modern English, Telugu names both the language and its associated cultural identity.
