Thorium was named in the nineteenth century by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius after Thor, the Norse god associated with thunder. The ending -ium follows a naming pattern widely used for metallic chemical elements. Berzelius announced the discovery and naming of the element in 1829 after examining a mineral sample. The name is therefore a deliberate scientific coinage from a mythological proper name, not an ancient word for a radioactive substance.
