権力や立場のある人に気に入られようとして、必要以上にへつらったり持ち上げたりする人を指す。自分の利益や保身のために相手に追従し、独自の意見を控えてでも機嫌を取るような人を、軽蔑をこめて表す語。
A toady is a person who praises and agrees with someone powerful in a dishonest or excessive way to gain favor. It is a strongly negative word for someone who acts like a flatterer.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
toady は「flatter（お世辞を言う）」「suck up to（ごまをする）」をする側の“人”だと結びつけると覚えやすいです。単に感じがいい人ではなく、上の立場の人に取り入って得をしようとする、かなり軽蔑的な語。boss’s toady, political toady のように、権力者の周辺で出やすいと意識すると定着します。似た語の sycophant よりややイメージしやすく、へつらいが見えている感じ。つづりは today と紛らわしいので、toa- を見たら「追従する人」に切り替えるのがコツです。
Remember `toady` as a person, not the action itself. It is someone who flatters powerful people to get favor, like a boss's toady. Be careful not to mix it up with `today`; the spelling is close, but the meaning is completely different.

18世紀の toad-eater の短縮で、toad（ヒキガエル、古英語系）+ eater（食べる人）から成ります。見世物師の助手が毒見役まで務めて主人にへつらったことから「おべっか使い」になり、eat や edible も同じ語根です。
Toady is a shortened form of toad-eater from the 18th century. It was based on the idea of a performer's assistant who would do unpleasant or risky things for the master, even supposedly eating a toad, and so it came to suggest extreme flattery and submission. Over time, the literal image faded and the word remained for a person who flatters someone in power.
