「triggering」は、何かの反応や出来事、感情を引き起こしたり、開始させたりする動作を表す動詞です。メカニズムや装置を作動させる物理的な意味のほか、心理的なトラウマや強い感情的反応を引き起こすことも指します。現代では特に、心的外傷後ストレス障害（PTSD）の文脈でよく使われます。

Begin with the literal image of pulling a gun’s trigger and setting a mechanism in motion, then extend that image to causes: triggering protests, triggering anxiety, or triggering a reaction. In trauma-related language, an experience can be triggering when it recalls painful memories or causes serious emotional distress. Also notice the adjective use in “the scene was triggering,” although forms such as “is triggering protests” function verbally.

Triggering is the -ing form of trigger. English trigger developed from Dutch trekker, meaning a trigger or something that pulls, from trekken, “to pull.” The word first referred to the mechanism pulled to fire a weapon. Its meaning then broadened metaphorically to anything that starts a mechanism, event, reaction, or emotional response. Adding -ing presents that causing action as ongoing, or forms an adjective describing something that provokes a response.
