triglyceride は、ギリシャ語系 tri-「3」と glycer-「甘い」、化学語尾 -ide から成る。glycer- は glycerin や glycogen と同根で、甘い成分を土台に三つ結びついた語だと分かると、中性脂肪の名が構造そのものを表していると見えてくる。
Triglyceride is built from tri-, meaning "three," glycer-, meaning "sweet," and the chemical ending -ide. The glycer- part is the same root seen in glycerin and glycogen, from Greek glykys, "sweet." The name developed to describe a chemical structure with three linked fatty parts based on glycerol.
