ターバン

解説 Definition

turban は、頭に巻く長い布や、そのような形のかぶり物を意味します。日本語の「ターバン」とほぼ同じですが、英語では文化的・宗教的な装いとしての頭巻きを指すことが多いです。

A turban is a head covering made by wrapping a long piece of cloth around the head, or a ready-made covering with a similar shape. It is often worn as part of a cultural or religious tradition.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

日本語の「ターバン」と同じく、長い布を頭に巻いたものや、その形のかぶり物を指す。wear a turban、wrap a turban、a white turban のように覚えると実用的。単なる帽子 hat ではなく、布を巻く形と文化的・宗教的な装いを意識する。

Connect turban with the familiar Japanese loanword ターバン, but remember its typical English setting: a wrapped cloth worn as cultural or religious dress, not simply any hat. Picture someone wrapping a long white cloth around the head before a ceremony. Useful combinations include wear a turban, wrap a turban, and a cotton turban. The contrast with hat is helpful: a hat is usually a shaped object placed on the head, while a traditional turban is formed by winding cloth around it.

turban の語源・成り立ち Etymology

英語 turban はフランス語などを経て、トルコ語 tülbent に由来し、さらにペルシャ語 dulband(頭に巻く布)にさかのぼります。ラテン語 turbare や英語 turbine とは語源的な関係がありません。

English turban entered through French forms ultimately derived from Persian dulband, a word for this kind of head covering, with Turkish tülbent also influencing its transmission into European languages. Although the spelling may invite comparison with turbine or Latin turbare, modern etymological accounts do not generally treat those words as its source. The word has long referred to cloth wrapped around the head.
