覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
under + signed と分けると覚えやすい語。signed は「署名済みの」、under は文書の本文より“下”を意識すると、ページ末尾・署名欄の下で名前を書いた人、つまり「下記署名者」。普段の会話ではほぼ出ず、契約書・申請書・宣誓書で The undersigned agrees... のように出る定型表現として覚えると強い。signature と同じ sign 系でまとめ、underline とは無関係と切り分けると混同しにくい。

undersigned は under「下に」+ sign「署名する」から成る語で、sign はラテン語 signum「しるし」にさかのぼります。signal や signature と同根で、文書の末尾で名前を記す位置関係から「下に署名した者」すなわち下記署名者になるのが見えてきます。
Undersigned is made from under and signed, meaning "signed below." Sign comes from Latin signum, meaning "mark" or "token," which also gave English signature and signal.
