un-「〜でない」+ focused から成る語。focus はラテン語 focus「炉・火の中心」にさかのぼり、光や注意が一点に集まるイメージから「焦点」になった。focal や refocus も同根で、unfocused は「中心の火に集まらない」と捉えると腑に落ちる。
