覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
université は英語の university に対応するフランス語の「大学」。末尾の é はアクセント記号を含む一文字で、通常の e に置き換えない。Université de ... のような大学名や、案内板・地図で目にする語として覚えるとよい。英語文中に現れてもフランス語表記なので、綴りと大文字使用は名称に従う。
Connect French université with the familiar English word university: both refer to an institution of higher education and share the same Latin ancestry. Pay special attention to the final é, which carries an acute accent and should not be silently replaced when reproducing the French spelling. Look for patterns such as Université de followed by a place or institutional name. On a map or entrance sign, université identifies a university; inside an official name, capitalization follows French naming conventions.

université の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語「universitas(全体・組合)」からフランス語に入った語。「uni-(一つの)」+「versus(向けられた)」で「一つにまとめられたもの」が原義。中世に教師と学生の組合を指すようになり、現在の「大学」の意味に。関連語:universe(宇宙)、universal(普遍的な)。
French université descends from Latin universitas, meaning a whole, totality, community, or corporate body. Universitas is related to universus, “combined into one” or “whole,” formed from unus, “one,” and a form related to vertere, “to turn.” In medieval usage, universitas came to denote an organized body of teachers and students. That institutional sense developed into the modern French meaning “university,” parallel to English university.
