Unwound is the past tense and past participle of unwind. It can mean that something was untwisted, unwrapped, or opened from a rolled shape. It can also mean that a person relaxed after stress or tension.

un- は否定でなく「逆向き」を表し、wind は古英語 windan「ねじる・巻く」。だから unwound は「巻いたものをほどいた」が原義で、そこから緊張がほどけて「くつろいだ」にも広がる。winding や wind up と同じ根で、「巻き」が芯にある。
