覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

車を指す ute は utility vehicle を縮めたオーストラリア・ニュージーランドの口語です。発音は /juːt/ で、utility の最初の音と結び付けます。荷物を載せる後部荷台と乗員用キャビンを備えた実用車を思い浮かべ、drive a ute、load the ute のような現地英語の表現で覚えましょう。SUV 全般を指す語ではありません。

Ute is an informal Australian and New Zealand shortening of utility vehicle. Say it as /juːt/, like the opening sound of utility followed by t. Picture a practical vehicle with a passenger cab in front and an open tray for tools, equipment, or other loads behind it. Common phrases include drive a ute and load the ute. A ute is broadly comparable to a pickup truck, but the regional term and local vehicle traditions give it a distinct usage; it does not simply mean every kind of SUV.

ute の語源・成り立ち Etymology

utility vehicle」の短縮形です。ラテン語のuti(使う)を語根とするutility(実用性)に由来し、荷台と客室を兼ねた多目的な車を指します。同根語utilize(活用する)からも、実用性を最優先する車種の特徴が語源だと納得できます。

Ute arose in Australian English in the twentieth century as a shortening of utility or utility vehicle. Utility ultimately comes through French from Latin utilitas, “usefulness,” related to uti, “to use.” The shortened form reflects the vehicle’s practical function: it combines space for passengers with an area for carrying goods or equipment. In this automotive sense, ute is also widely used in New Zealand. It is unrelated to Ute, the capitalized name of an Indigenous people and language of North America.
