vellum は古フランス語 velin「子牛皮の」から来て、さらにラテン語 vitulus「子牛」にさかのぼります。もとは特に子牛皮の上質な parchment を指しましたが、現在は羊・ヤギなどの皮で作る高級な羊皮紙全般にも使われます。
Vellum came into English through Old French velin, meaning "made from calfskin," and it goes back to Latin vitulus, meaning "calf." Related words include veal and vitelline. The idea changed from the skin of a calf to the fine writing material made from that skin.
