parchment は古フランス語 parchemin を経て、ラテン語 pergamena「ペルガモン産の紙」に由来します。小アジアの都市 Pergamum で良質な羊皮紙が有名だったため、その地名が素材名となり「羊皮紙」を表すようになりました。関連語に Pergamene があります。
