小瓶

vial は中英語で phial の異形として現れ、古フランス語 fiole を経て、ラテン語 phiala、さらにギリシャ語 phiale「浅い器」にさかのぼります。関連語は phial です。もとは広い口の器だったため、「液体を入れる小容器」への変化が見えます。
Vial came into English as a form related to phial, from Old French fiole, from Latin phiala, and ultimately from Greek phiale, meaning a broad, shallow bowl.
