解説 Definition

waged は wage(賃金を払う、戦いを行う)の過去形・過去分詞ですが、形容詞では賃金を得て働くという意味で使われます。特に waged work や waged workers のように、有給の仕事や労働者を表します。

Waged describes work, employment, or workers for which regular payment is received. It distinguishes paid labor from unpaid activities such as volunteering, domestic responsibilities, or other work performed without wages.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

wage「賃金」と結び付け、waged work や waged employment を「賃金が支払われる仕事・雇用」とひとかたまりで覚えます。形は wage に -d を付けたものですが、この形容詞用法では「働いた」より「有給の」が中心です。反対の unpaid work と対比すると意味が明確になります。

Connect waged with the noun wage, the money paid for work. In the combinations waged work, waged employment, and waged workers, the adjective means that the labor is paid. Contrast it with unpaid work to make the distinction clear. Although waged is also the past form of the verb wage in expressions such as waged war, this entry concerns employment and income. In this sense, think “earning wages,” not simply “worked” and not “carried out a campaign.”

waged の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古北フランス語 wagier(担保を差し出す、賭ける)に由来し、ゲルマン語 wadja(誓約)が起源。元は「誓約のもとに働く」意味から「賃金をもらって働く」へと変化した。wage(賃金)の形容詞形で「有給の」を意味する。関連語: wage(賃金)、wager(賭け)。

Waged is formed from wage and the ending -d. Wage came through Old North French from a Germanic word associated with a pledge or security; wager belongs to the same historical family. A wage was originally a pledged or guaranteed payment and became the regular term for money paid for labor. The adjective waged consequently developed the sense “performed in return for wages.”
