古英語の人名で Wasa（人名）+ tun（囲い地・集落）に由来し、「ワサの集落」を意味する英国の地名姓。初代大統領ジョージ・ワシントンの姓から米国の首都名となった。関連語: -ton で終わる地名（Boston, Clinton）は同じ古英語 tun に由来する。
Washington originated as an English place name and surname, traditionally interpreted as an Old English personal name combined with tūn, “enclosure, farm, or settlement.” It therefore meant the settlement associated with a person bearing that name. The American place names honor George Washington, the first U.S. president: the federal capital was named for him, and Washington Territory, later Washington State, received the same name. The ending -ton appears in many English-derived place names and reflects Old English tūn.
