地名Bostonは、イングランド東部リンカンシャーの町名に由来し、古英語の「Botwulf's stone（聖ボトウルフの石）」が縮まったもの。聖ボトウルフは7世紀の修道院長で、この地に修道院を建てた。アメリカのボストンは1630年にイギリスからの入植者がこの町にちなんで命名した。
The American city was named in 1630 after Boston in Lincolnshire, England, the home region of several early colonists. The English place name is traditionally associated with Saint Botwulf, also called Botolph, and has been explained as a shortened form of a phrase meaning “Botwulf’s stone.” Thus, the American name was transferred from an older English town rather than newly created in Massachusetts.
