windowing は window + -ing で、window は古ノルド語 vindauga「風の目」に由来し、vind「風」+ auga「目」に分けられます。『風や光を通す目』という原像が、情報を枠で区切って見せる意味にもつながり、同根要素の wind や eye を思うと腑に落ちます。
Windowing comes from window + -ing. Window comes from Old Norse vindauga, literally "wind-eye," from vindr "wind" and auga "eye." The original image was an opening for air and light, and later this idea of a framed opening was extended to screens and information shown in separate "windows."
