Memory Tip
within an hour なら1時間という限度を越えず、within five minutes of the house なら家から5分の範囲内。
Picture a clear boundary and keep the action on its inner side. In within an hour, the hour is a deadline that must not be crossed; in within five minutes of my house, five minutes marks the maximum distance. This boundary can represent time, distance, rules, or other limits. Contrast within with beyond or outside: within stays inside the permitted range, while beyond crosses it. Common patterns such as within two days, within walking distance, and within the rules reinforce this single spatial idea.

Etymology
関連語に inner(内側の)、within 自体が without(~なしに)と対をなす。
Within comes from Old English withinnan, formed from elements meaning roughly “against or toward” and “inside.” Its earliest uses expressed location on the inner side of a boundary. That spatial sense later extended naturally to nonphysical limits, including periods of time, distances, quantities, and rules. The element related to “inside” also belongs to the Germanic word family represented in modern English by in and inner.
